In this forth and final article on sports in Stavanger, I’m looking at water sports.
It’s officially spring and what better way to celebrate than getting outdoors and making the most of the warmer, lighter days. If you’d like to try your hand at water-based activities then here’s a list of some local companies offering a range of great activities.
Canoeing
Hire canoes for a day trip from the Kronen Gaard Hotel in Vatne, nr Sandnes.
For a different view of Preikestolen and Kjerag and the rest of the dramatic scenery of Lysefjord, head out onto the water, with Big Wall Kayak (June to Sept). They offer half day, full day and overnight kayaking tours.

Surfing
Norway’s best beaches for surfing are situated along the Jaeren coast – only 30 mins drive from Stavanger. Brave the chilly waters with Surf School who offer courses and rental from April to October.
Looking for more of an adrenaline rush? Maybe Kite Surfing is more for you! Kite Surfing run many beginner’s courses throughout the year at Sola beach. It can be enjoyed by all the family at your own pace – whether you’re seeking an extreme or serene experience.

Fishing
Fishing in lakes and rivers is allowed, but you must purchase a state licence fee first, available from the Post Office. Some local river owners also require you to purchase a fishing permit. For places to fish in our local area and more info on who you need to contact to obtain local permits, click here.
90km from Stavanger is Mo Laksegard in Sand. They offer different fishing expeditions for sea trout and salmon on the Suldalslågen River, depending on the season. You can even go on a salmon safari where you snorkel along the river amongst the salmon in their natural habitat.

Deep Sea fishing
Stavanger Deep Sea Fishing Club arranges tours from The Hummeren Hotel in Tananger for groups from 4 – 12 people. Tours from 3 hours to all day can be arranged, and all equipment is provided.
Diving
Jaeren Dykkersenter, situated in the centre of Stavanger at Østervåg 19, runs courses and activities in Diving.
Sailing
Stavanger Seilforening (Sailing Club) runs courses on how to sail for all ages. In addition, if you become a member there are many events and activities organised throughout the year for all the family – from regattas to theme nights and parties! Check their website for further details.

Also, check out Cynthia’s review of cable water skiing and as ever, if there are any great experiences you’ve had please leave a comment to let everyone else know!
