The International School of Stavanger (ISS), founded in 1966, is an independent, private Pre-school–12 school accredited by the New England Association of Colleges and Schools and the Council of International Schools (formerly ECIS). Located in Madla (5 km from the city centre) and occupying 6 hectares of land, the school accepts students from 3 to 19 years old, offering International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Exams and International Baccalaureate (IB) Exams.

The school is administered by a Director and governed by a Board of Trustees comprised mostly of parents connected with the major oil companies or NATO located here in Stavanger, Norway. Approximately 700 students from over 40 countries attend ISS.

The ISS is dedicated to providing its students with an English language education in a supportive, academically stimulating, and multi-cultural environment. Its goal is to enable students to succeed in continuing educational programs and to live as responsible and contributing citizens in the global community.The ISS vision is to prepare students for greater global participation by helping them become responsible, empowered learners.

The campus includes classrooms for all grades; special areas for art, music, drama, and computers; a 370-seat theatre; three indoor gymnasiums; a 400-meter track; football/soccer, rugby, softball and baseball fields; an indoor raquetball court; a trim room; and extensive outdoor recreational areas.

The school is an active member of international school organizations for sports, music, drama, and Model United Nations which gives its students a chance to travel outside of Norway to expand their learning environment. The ISS also takes great advantage of Norway’s wonderful outdoor education centers with many of its students traveling with their class to the mountains or the coastline for a week of nature, exploration and learning together outside the walls of their classroom.

In 2009-2010, the yearly tuition is Norwegian Kroner (NOK) 154,000 for company payments Kindergarten-grade 12; NOK 53,500 for private payments grades K-9; and NOK 90,000 for private payments grades 10-12. All new students must pay the company rates to enter the school. The tuition fee covers all books and materials, and school bus transportation. Pre-school tuition for three- and four-year-olds is NOK 23,300.

Entrance Age

Children entering Pre-School 3, Pre-School 4, Kindergarten or Grade One must be of age by September 1st of the current year (3 for Pre-School , 4 for Pre-School 4, 5 for Kindergarten, 6 for Grade One). If this is in conflict with the school entrance age in other countries, a request can be made for special consideration. After consultation, with parents, teachers and the school counsellor, the Principal’s decision is final.

The Director and the Principal decide on the admission and grade placement after reviewing a child’s birth date, consulting previous school records, and consulting with staff so that each child is placed in an appropriate educational environment. If no records are received, or if they are incomplete, placement tests may be given. ISS reserves the right to make changes in the initial placement if subsequent observations and/or testing indicate the need for a change.

Complete school records and transcripts must be received before admission is complete.

English as an Additional Language

Students whose mother tongue is not English or students who have been enrolled in an EAL program in their previous school will be evaluated by the EAL teacher to assess the child’s ability in English as a normal part of the admissions process.

Mathematics for Assessment for Placement

New High School students may be asked to undertake a mathematics placement test.

About Cynthia Myrnes

Cynthia is a Singaporean who has been living in Stavanger since Feb 2008 with her Norwegian husband. She works as a physiotherapist here and also owns her own petsitting service, Stavanger Petsitter, for the residents of Stavanger. In addition, she manages the Stavanger International Moms group. She loves hanging out with friends, spending time with animals, travelling and watersports such as scuba diving and wake boarding. Most of all, she is enjoying the experience of being a first time mom!
