Halloween is an annual holiday observed on October 31. It has roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints’ Day, but is today largely a secular celebration.

Halloween is not traditionally celebrated in Norway, however in recent years, probably due to influence from American culture, children have been seen dressing up and going trick-or-treating in the neighbourhoods.

Instead of saying “trick or treat” in when the door is answered, Norwegian kids say “knask eller knep” or “digg eller deng” which mean about the same thing as in English. It is generally harmless and the children are just out for some fun however according to media reports from previous years, some children throw eggs, toilet paper or commit other acts of vandalism to homes whose owners do not have treats for them. So you may want to keep a jar of candy available for possible trick-or-treaters.

For the teenagers and adults, costume parties are getting to be pretty common and do not be shocked when you see zombies and other ghouls roaming Skagen!
