biss 250x125 British International School of Stavanger (BISS)
Nestled in a picturesque landscape 8 km south of the city centre, BISS was founded in 1977 with facilities for 400 pupils. With the age range of its students from 18 months to 16 years old and over 30 nationalities represented, all are welcome to join BISS, for any length of time, during any period of transition. BISS has recently been inspected by the UK authorities (March 2010) and graded as ‘excellent and outstanding’ in all areas.

“Because the school is truly international with over 20 nationalities represented, there is no stigma attached to being ‘new’. Staff are very aware of seeing the world from a child’s view and attempts are made to help every child belong. Additional help is give to children whose main language is not English and children who need additional support. Because the academic programme and range of opportunities are so strong, there are few worries that children will be behind when they go back home to their own school systems.”

The International Baccalaureate (IB) and International Primary Curriculum (IPC) programmes are the foundation of BISS’ academic success. Schools and universities throughout the world consider the IB and IPC to have no parallel in quality and depth. As competition increases for the best places in secondary, further and higher education, the IB and IPC philosophy is rapidly growing in strength and application. BISS is now a fully authorised IB school for the Middle Years Programme.

BISS has a long-standing interest in, and commitment to, environmental issues. From recycling all its waste, to planning for renewable energies, BISS in increasingly confident in its ability to sustain and eco-friendly school.

BISS’ immediate physical environment is extremely favourable with access to local beauty spots and conservation areas, including a secluded nature trail through the Gausel Forest and a short walk from Jåttå Children’s Farm.

BISS ensures that its students are well-equipped with the skills and knowledge require for work and lifelong learning. In addition, an important focus is placed on learning in a fun, open and relaxed environment. BISS staff know their students personally and are always on the lookout for anything that might be out of the ordinary. BISS understands that each child learns at a different speed, in a different manner and with a different attitude so its staff respond in kind with contemporary and traditional techniques to suit each child in the community. BISS also has several effective measures in place to reduce the stress and anxiety of moving to a new place and school and to help new students cope well with their situations.

Cocurricular activities are important to develop a well-balanced child. From friendly competition to serious sporting endeavour, all children at BISS will find sports, uniformed groups and games to suit their interests and abilities, supported by expert and specialist staff.

BISS also offers an online forum (with a password protected section) for parents of current BISS students so they can get information about individual classes and stay in touch with current and upcoming events. In addition, the school also has parent support organisations to assist parents. Volunteers are always welcome.
