Why did you start Stavanger Expats?

Stavanger Expats was created after Cynthia and Fonda had lived in Norway over 1 year each.  The girls were unable to find all the information that was needed to move or live in Stavanger as an expat in one place – so they decided to create one. The girls had some help when starting the site from friends – helping them to collect information. The girls also felt there were little avenues to meet new people, so started weekly and monthly event meet ups to help expats meet each other. Read more about it here and here!

Why do you ask for sponsors?

We have a great group of volunteers at Stavanger Expats! They help us promote and write articles every month, we love them! The co-founders each work on the site approximately 20 hours per week, excluding weekly meetings. Neither of us get renumeration for the work done on the site. What is RSS?

RSS is a feed which you can add to your Google Reader or other RSS feed reader. This will send your ‘Reader’ a message when a new post is made to the site or forum depending on which RSS you are subscribed to. You can subscribe to both. Website Help


How do I make a account?

You have to make a account to comment on articles or to use the forum. This is to help reduce spam and allow people to be identified. To make an account, you will need to click the Register button in the sidebar to the right (highlighted in red in photo to the right). This will take you to the registration page where you can make a username, password, add your info, add a photo and have the option of writing a little bit about yourself. After this you will receive a email for confirmation and then you can log in. This will allow you to make comments and use the forum. The next time you come to the site, you can login in from the sidebar. If you have forgotten your password, check your email or click the ‘Lost Your Password’ button to have an automated email send you a new one.

How do I edit my information?

Once you have set up an account you can add information about yourself by clicking the profile button in the sidebar. You can add your website, facebook or instant messenger info. Know that anyone else who has an account on the site can view this information. If you have any issues with adding a photo through the site, the consider using a Gravatar – this website is Gravatar capable, click here to learn more about Gravatar. In addition to this you can also change your password to a new password in the profile section.

How does the Forum work?

The Forum is a great way to communicate and is rather simple to use. Pick a category for the topic you want to talk about. So let’s say for example you had something for sale! Then you would click into ‘Classifieds’ and click the ‘Add Topic’ button. The rest is like an email or writing in MS Word. Once posted, you can ‘subscribe’ to the topic (meaning you will be notified if there are any replies) or you can ‘watch’ the topic (meaning that next time you sign into the forum you will be told there have been replies). You can also ‘subscribe’ and ‘watch’ all the other posts by clicking the button at the top of that specific post’s page. If you would like to have all posts and topics sent to you, you can click the ‘All RSS’ button on the bottom on the main forum page.
